California bars public officials from issuing meme coins

Developing Reported

California public officials will be barred from issuing their own meme coins under AB 2409, one of 11 corruption, consumer and crypto-fraud bills Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Sunday. Meme coins are cryptocurrencies built on jokes, celebrities or trends, with prices driven by hype. The law also bars platforms from offering California residents coins that use an official's likeness. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2027, and is enforced through civil action. It passed both houses without a no vote. The governor's office framed it as a contrast with President Trump's own meme coin.
