Disabled veterans get a bigger property tax break; San Diego leads the state in veterans' exemptions
California will expand property tax relief for 100% disabled veterans under SB 296, one of five veterans bills Gov. Gavin Newsom announced signing Monday. In its final legislative form as reported, qualifying veterans with household income of $83,474 or less would owe no property tax on the first $1 million of their home's taxable value; others would get half off that amount, with both figures indexed to inflation. San Diego County had 17,778 disabled veterans' exemptions in 2025, the most of any California county, according to the state Board of Equalization.
