Falls sent nearly 40,000 older San Diegans to the ER in 2024

Developing Confirmed

Falls were the leading cause of emergency department visits for San Diego County residents 60 and older in 2024, County data show: nearly 40,000 visits, more than 13,000 hospitalizations and 338 deaths. During Fall Prevention Awareness Week, the County's Aging & Independence Services urged older adults and caregivers to check their fall risks, noting that fear of falling again can lead people to limit activity, which can bring physical decline, depression and isolation. Since at least March, the County has also offered free fall-prevention kits to qualifying residents 60 and older or with disabilities.
