Update: The Nepal floods behind the ILO's warning killed more than 1,250 people
This story has been updated: Update: Nepal's August floods killed at least 1,400; nearly 5,300 still missing, UNICEF says Oct. 10, 2026
Oct. 1, 2026 — This updates our Oct. 1 report on the International Labour Organization's warning about jobs lost to Nepal's floods. The floods began Aug. 26, when a glacier collapse sent ice, rock and mud down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers near Nepal's border with China, wiping out towns and villages. More than 1,250 people were killed and more than 4,200 were missing, and property, housing and infrastructure losses reached at least 387.5 billion Nepalese rupees, about $2.56 billion, the head of Nepal's disaster authority told Reuters on Sept. 4. About 20,000 houses need rebuilding, at least 7,500 of them destroyed.
The UN Development Programme estimated at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris and found that about three in four affected people lived in areas already facing greater hardship in livelihoods and basic services. The Food and Agriculture Organization reported about 1,800 hectares of crops damaged, mostly rice paddy, and thousands of livestock killed, during the main monsoon planting season.
The ILO's assessment, according to UN News, found that the damage to jobs and livelihoods reaches beyond the communities directly hit.
The wall: Death and missing counts after Sept. 4 and the ILO's own job-loss figures are not given in the reports cited.
Tier: Reported (based on Nepal's disaster authority via Reuters, UNDP's assessment, FAO via Emirates News Agency, and UN News on the ILO)
