Fed orders American Express to fix its anti-money-laundering program

Developing Confirmed

Oct. 8, 2026 — The Federal Reserve Board issued a consent cease-and-desist order against American Express Co. over what it called failures to detect and report suspicious activity related to money laundering and significant deficiencies in its anti-money-laundering program, particularly at its national bank. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued a separate order and a civil money penalty against the bank, the Fed's order says. Amex and its Travel Related Services unit must submit plans within 90 days. The order says the companies cooperated and took remedial steps; they consented without admitting or denying the allegations.

The wall: The amount of the OCC's penalty is not in the Fed's documents.

Tier: Confirmed (based on the Fed's release and its order)
