Category 4 Hurricane Simon skirts Mexico's west-central coast
Oct. 11, 2026 — Hurricane Simon, a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds, was skirting the coast of west-central Mexico on the afternoon of Oct. 11, about 55 miles south of Cabo Corrientes and 105 miles west-northwest of Manzanillo, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said at 3 p.m. CST. Moving north-northwest at 6 mph, its center was expected to pass near the coast that afternoon and evening, move farther offshore Oct. 12 and turn back toward Mexico around Oct. 14, the center said.
A hurricane warning runs from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and covers the Islas Marías, with a hurricane watch north to Bahía Tempehuaya. The center warned of a dangerous storm surge and large, destructive waves near and east of where the center nears land, and storm totals of up to 30 inches of rain in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.
At daybreak Simon had 150 mph winds. "We're expecting catastrophic wind and life-threatening storm surge impacts along that west central coast of Mexico," hurricane center senior specialist Phillipe Pappin told the AP. Jalisco suspended classes in 22 coastal municipalities and began evacuating at-risk areas, and businesses in Puerto Vallarta boarded up windows, the AP reported.
TDD reports on public forecasts; it does not issue forecasts or warnings. For conditions and warnings where you are, follow your local National Weather Service office and emergency officials; in Mexico, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) and civil protection officials.
The wall: Whether and where Simon's center comes ashore, and any damage or injuries, were not known at publication.
Tier: Reported (based on the hurricane center's 3 p.m. advisory and the AP's account of the center and Mexican officials)
