Djibouti shipwreck toll rises to 139, with 84 still missing, UN migration agency says
Oct. 11, 2026 — At least 139 migrants died when their boat capsized off Djibouti, and 84 remain missing, the UN migration agency IOM said, UN News reported. The boat, carrying 305 people from Djibouti toward Yemen, went down near Guehere, north of Obock, early Oct. 9; about 82 survived. IOM called it one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded on the Eastern Route from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. "No one gets into a boat like that unless they believe there is no other safe way," said IOM Director General Amy Pope.
