Justice Department sues California to block counting of ballots from people it flags as likely noncitizens
Oct. 15, 2026 — The Justice Department sued California election officials, including Secretary of State Shirley Weber, asking a judge to bar the state from counting mail ballots from about 20,000 people the federal government flagged as likely noncitizens until their citizenship is confirmed, LAist reported. The suit calls this "commonplace election relief." Weber said the government had not provided evidence for the list. Gov. Gavin Newsom called the suit unfounded. The election is Nov. 3.
