This story has been updated: Update: Guterres tells biodiversity summit that progress on protecting nature is 'far too slow' Oct. 17, 2026

Oct. 15, 2026 — Fewer than half of the national targets countries set to protect plants, animals and ecosystems are on track, a UN report found days before the COP17 biodiversity conference in Yerevan, Armenia, UN News reported. Even if current commitments are met, about 26% of land and 12% of the ocean would be protected by 2030, short of the 30% goal in the 2022 Kunming-Montreal framework. "This bad news means that the war on nature has not yet ended," Secretary-General António Guterres said.
