Update: WHO steps up Ebola readiness in Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan after cases in Congo, Uganda and Kenya

Update Reported

Oct. 16, 2026 — This updates our Oct. 15 report on Kenya's second Ebola case. The World Health Organization is strengthening Ebola preparedness across its 22-country Eastern Mediterranean region, with intensified support for Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan as priority countries, UN News reported. The step follows deadly outbreaks caused by Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses that cause Ebola disease, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, and a confirmed case in Kenya linked to Congo. No Ebola cases have been reported in the region, but conflict, displacement and overstretched health systems make preparation difficult, WHO said.

The wall: Country-level readiness findings were not included.

Tier: Reported (based on UN News' account of the World Health Organization)
