UN aviation agency urges countries to coordinate air traffic to cut holding patterns and delays
Oct. 26, 2026 — The International Civil Aviation Organization is urging countries to coordinate air traffic flows across borders so that departures are held on the ground, rather than leaving planes circling at their destinations, UN News reported. The approach, known as air traffic flow management, has airlines, airports, controllers and weather services share information and decide together. In Europe alone, air traffic management delays cost an estimated $2.3 billion or more in 2025, according to EUROCONTROL, the continent's air navigation body.
