Coastal flood warning for San Diego County's coast runs until 1 p.m. Oct. 29; La Jolla gauge readings exceed the highest on NOAA's station record, in preliminary data

Developing Confirmed Corrected Oct. 28

Oct. 27, 2026 — A National Weather Service coastal flood warning for the coasts of San Diego and Orange counties is in effect until 1 p.m. Oct. 29, during late-morning high tides, the Weather Service said. Observed high tides have run 1.4 to 1.6 feet above predictions, it said in its update at 12:53 p.m. Oct. 27. The County, in a release the same day, called it an advisory.

At NOAA's La Jolla tide gauge at Scripps Pier, the morning high tide reached 7.90 feet on Oct. 26 and 7.98 feet on Oct. 27, in preliminary data, above the highest level listed on the station's record, 7.81 feet in November 2015. Both are measured above mean lower low water.

In Mission Beach, a protective berm on the bay side broke at San Rafael Place during the high tide on Oct. 26, and water flowed into nearby streets and alleys, CBS 8 reported from the scene. NBC 7, citing the City, had placed the break near El Carmel Place. Crews reinforced the berm and pumped out the water the same day, NBC 7 reported. The City asks people to stay off flood-control berms.

The wall: NOAA's tide figures are preliminary until verified. Reports of flooding elsewhere on the county's coast were not found, and the City has not published where its berms are.

Tier: Confirmed (based on the National Weather Service's warning (update of 12:53 p.m. Oct. 27), NOAA's preliminary La Jolla gauge data and NBC 7's account of the City)

Corrections

  • Corrected Oct. 28, 2026: An earlier version of this story placed the Oct. 26 berm break near El Carmel Place, citing NBC 7's account of the City. A CBS 8 report from the scene placed it at San Rafael Place; the story now gives both accounts.
