Greenhouse gases reached record levels in 2025, UN weather agency says

Developing Reported

Oct. 28, 2026 — Concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere reached record highs in 2025, the World Meteorological Organization said Oct. 27 in its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, UN News reported. Carbon dioxide averaged 426.8 parts per million, 153% of the pre-industrial level of 1750. Its rise from 2024 to 2025, 2.8 parts per million, was smaller than the surge of 3.5 a year earlier, which coincided with a strong El Niño, the agency said. The Bulletin measures the gases that build up in the atmosphere, not each year's emissions.
